La Palma: The green pearl in the Atlantic

The Canary Island of La Palma was unknown to many until the volcanic eruption in the Cumbre Vieja in September 2021.

Locals affectionately call the island "La Isla Bonita" (The Beautiful Island). It is the greenest, fifth-largest, and most northwestern of the seven Canary Islands, located approximately 445 kilometers off the northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.

La Palma is a true hidden gem due to its exceptionally beautiful flora and fauna. Around 81.000 Palmeros and immigrants live on the island, which corresponds to about 120 inhabitants per square kilometer. Compared to the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, life on La Palma is very tranquil.

Worth seeing is the area of El Canal and Los Tilos, declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1983, with an area of about 511 hectares. The area was expanded again in 1997 by about 138 square kilometers. Most of it is on the island's landmass, while the rest is in the marine protected areas around La Palma. However, this is only a small part of the Canary Island to explore.

A rental car is perfect for exploring the Canary Island. For example, vacationers can easily reach the highest point of La Palma, the Roque de los Muchachos, with its impressive 2.426 meters in height. The drive to the bizarre-looking volcanic peak can be somewhat adventurous, but it is definitely worth the effort. The view of one of the world's largest erosion craters, as well as the rock formations themselves, make the Roque a worthwhile excursion during your La Palma vacation.

La Palma is not only known for its breathtaking nature and volcanic landscapes but also for its clear night sky. This island offers ideal conditions for astro-tourism and is a mecca for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts from around the world.

Thanks to strict light protection regulations and clear air, La Palma is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. The island is far enough away from major light sources and therefore offers an unobstructed view of the night sky.

On the Roque de los Muchachos is one of the most important observatories in the world. Here you can book a tour and explore the universe through powerful telescopes. The observatory houses some of the most advanced telescopes and is a center of astronomical research.

There are also numerous viewpoints and star parks specially set up for observing the night sky. Places like Llano del Jable and Mirador del Llano de la Venta offer not only spectacular views but also information boards and guided tours to help you identify constellations and planets. With special apps and interactive maps, visitors can explore the night sky and learn more about the visible celestial bodies.

Culture lovers also get their money's worth. The island offers a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity, expressed in its festivals, customs, architecture, and art.

The most famous festival is the "Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves," held every five years in Santa Cruz de La Palma, attracting thousands of visitors. During these celebrations, traditional dances, music, and processions are performed, showcasing the deep religious and cultural connection of the island's inhabitants. Other important festivals are the "Día de Los Indianos" during Carnival, celebrating the return of emigrants from Cuba, and the "Fiesta de la Cruz," where the island's crosses are festively decorated.

The old town of Santa Cruz de La Palma, the island's capital, is a example of well-preserved colonial architecture. Stroll through the cobbled streets and admire the magnificent mansions, historic churches, and picturesque squares. Particularly worth seeing are the Plaza España with the impressive Church of El Salvador and the Columbus Museum Casa de Colón, which highlights the history of the discovery of America.

The island is also a center of traditional Canarian craftsmanship. In small workshops and studios across the island, handmade products such as lace, ceramics, embroidery, and wickerwork are created. These crafts reflect the island's rich cultural tradition and are popular souvenirs for visitors. A visit to the craft markets and shops, such as the Mercado de Artesanía in Mazo, is a must for anyone wanting to discover the island's cultural roots.

The cuisine of La Palma reflects its cultural diversity. Try local specialties such as "Papas Arrugadas" (wrinkled potatoes) with "Mojo" sauce, fresh fish, goat cheese, and the delicious wines of the island, which thrive in the fertile volcanic soils. Traditional dishes are often combined with modern influences, making for an exciting culinary adventure.

On warm days, a trip to the sea is worthwhile. Whether you want to relax, swim, or engage in water sports – the beaches and coasts of La Palma offer something for everyone.

The unique black sand beaches are shaped by the volcanic origin of the island. One of the most popular beaches is Playa de Puerto Naos, a spacious beach with crystal clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. Here you can enjoy the sun, swim in the warm Atlantic, or stroll along the promenade. Another popular beach is Playa de Tazacorte, known for its calm waters and impressive cliffs in the background. Playa de Nogales, a secluded and untouched beach, is ideal for nature lovers and adventurers.

The waters around La Palma are a paradise for divers and snorkelers. The underwater landscape is rich in marine life and impressive rock formations. Dive in and discover the colorful variety of fish, corals, and other sea creatures native to these waters. Numerous diving schools and centers offer courses and guided dives for beginners and advanced divers.

There is also a wide range of water sports on offer. Try kayaking along the coast, windsurfing on the Atlantic waves, or join an exciting boat tour to observe dolphins and whales in their natural habitat.

For those who simply want to relax, La Palma's beaches offer plenty of options. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available at most beaches, and the beach bars and restaurants invite you to enjoy local cuisine and refreshing drinks. End the day with a breathtaking sunset over the Atlantic – an experience you won't soon forget.

La Palma places great importance on protecting its natural resources and preserving its beaches. Many of the island's beaches are awarded the Blue Flag, an international quality mark for clean and well-maintained beaches. Sustainable tourism is emphasized to preserve the beauty of the coasts.
